Summer family photos are beautiful — golden light, barefoot kids, warm evenings — but deciding what to wear often feels like the hardest part.

As a family photographer (and mum), I promise this: you don’t need perfect outfits to create meaningful photos. You need clothes that feel like you, move well, and photograph softly in summer light.

Here’s how I guide families every year for relaxed, timeless summer photos.

Start with Comfort (Always)

If something is itchy, tight, or constantly being adjusted — it will show.

For summer sessions, I recommend:

  • Breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, muslin and soft knits
  • Loose silhouettes that allow movement
  • Clothes your children can sit, run, cuddle and climb in
  • If your child can’t move freely, the moment won’t feel free either.

Choose a Soft, Sun-Friendly Colour Palette

Summer light in Victoria is warm and golden, especially in the evenings. Certain colours enhance that glow beautifully.

My go-to summer tones:

  • Soft whites and creams
  • Warm neutrals (sand, oat, stone)
  • Muted pastels (sage, dusty blue, soft blush)
  • Earthy tones (terracotta, olive, warm tan)

Try to avoid:

  • Neon or overly bright colours
  • Bold logos or text
  • Stark black (it absorbs light and can feel heavy in summer)

You don’t need everyone matching — just coordinated.

Dress Mum First (if possible)

This one matters.

When mum feels comfortable and confident, everyone relaxes.

Choose something that:

  • Moves when you walk
  • Feels soft against your skin
  • You don’t need to “fix” constantly

Flowy dresses, wrap styles, or relaxed linen sets photograph beautifully and allow you to focus on your family — not your outfit.

Layers Still Matter (Even in Summer)

Summer evenings can cool quickly, especially in regional Victoria.

Light layers add:

  • Texture
  • Depth
  • Practical warmth

Think:

  • A soft knit draped over shoulders
  • Barefoot kids with a light cardigan ready to go

Layers also give you variety without a full outfit change.

Bare Feet, Simple Shoes & Natural Details

Shoes don’t need to be fancy.

Best options:

  • Bare feet (where appropriate)
  • Simple sandals
  • Neutral leather shoes

Avoid runners with bright logos or heavy soles — they tend to pull focus away from connection.

Keep accessories minimal:

  • A simple necklace
  • Hair worn naturally
  • Hats only if they feel you (and won’t be constantly adjusted)

A Final Reassurance

Your photos won’t be beautiful because of the outfits.

They’ll be beautiful because of:

  • The way your child leans into you
  • The laughter between moments
  • The connection you already share

Clothing should support the story — not steal the spotlight.

If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help you style your session in a way that feels effortless and true to your family. A style is included when you book your session with colours and combinations you can work with. You're always welcome to reach out if you need!
